"Art is the truest form self expression."

Who are you? Give us an overview of your ethnicity/heritage?

My name is Sherry, I’m of Caribbean heritage. My parents live in the Cayman Islands but do visit Australia from time to time.

How did you come to Australia or were you born in Australia? Please share your experiences.

I was born and raised in the Cayman Islands but my family roots can be traced back all the way to Jamaica and West Africa – Ghana to be precise.

Name one thing you really passionate about and why?

Art. Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a fine artist or something closely related to the field – art is the truest form self expression. I’m a free spirit and I find that a paint brush on canvas allows me to explore my inner self.

Describe a few things you find fascinating about Australia’s multicultural society?

Everything! I love diversity because it enhances my creativity.

What kind of experiences have you had in relating with people whose backgrounds differ from your own?

All kinds really – I travel a lot and this allows me engage and interact with people from different walks of life.

What did you learn from this experience?

I learnt that the world is a reflection of oneself. We are everybody and everybody is us. We are all connected on some level despite our physical differences.

What does a commitment to diversity/multiculturalism mean to you?

It means being able to embrace all humanity and being able to operate from a place of love and abundance.

What do you see as the advantages and challenging aspects of an increasingly diverse community. What can we do to overcome such challenges?

As I previously stated, diversity enhances creativity, brings forth variety and expands one’s paradigm. The biggest challenge is those that are afraid of change and work hard to take us back to the stone age.

What fun and interesting activities/events can we do/hold to aid in bridging the cultural gap thereby creating an inclusive society for all to enjoy?

Music and food events celebrating African, Caribbean, Latin, Australian, Asian, Indian and European cultures.
